Do You Want to Guest Post an Article for Goeshard.Org?
It's been a while since I've done a meta post. Most of the time when I write, it's to nerd out over whatever programming project I'm working on. For the past year that's been just a lot of gamedev posts. But when I first imagined goeshard.org, this place was intended to be a hub of art, music, programming, and other DIY web projects.
I know when a lot of people set out to make an independent website their mentality is very much, "Welcome to my personal space!" That wasn't really the goal for this site. I wanted goeshard.org to be a celebration of various things across the web in general, but as working on games is very time consuming work, it's what I spend the majority of my free time thinking about. It's naturally what ends up being the primary content of the site.
Having more guest writers could be the element that elevates goeshard.org to coming closer to what I imagined and covering more topics.
Why Would I Want To Write Here?
If you read about "guest posting" today, you'll mostly hear about it in the context of SEO, but the practice was common before search engines. People who ran E/N sites increased their reach by affiliating with other E/N webmasters. One of the best ways to do this was to have the followers of one website be introduced to the webmaster of another website through a guest post. It's more than just a link in the side bar. It's content that encourages you to explore. It's the comic book crossover of the Internet.
By writing for the site you get your name, a description, an image avatar, and a link to your stuff on the side of your article (bottom on mobile). You also get the opportunity to talk about something that's important to you: whether that's something you're working on or just a subject you know a lot about. It's a natural way to drive traffic towards anything you want really.
Furthermore, you'll retain ownership of whatever you write. If you want to mirror the article on your own site, go for it. This is primarily about networking so it doesn't have to be that complicated. Let's be real, there is no money to be made from this site for either one of us.
Guidelines on Writing
Content First
This is a content first website. You should have something of substance to write about.
What constitutes substance? The best way to quantify it without dismissing too many things: Effort
Try to put some effort into the post and you're probably good.
Picking a Column
Don't worry about what column your article should go under. If the article is a good fit for the site, I will find the best way to categorize it. Don't feel limited to the topics that the current columns cover.
Dealbreakers
- No manifestoes,
- No preaching about any subject,
- No intentionally defacing the site.
We live in a world where people feel like they have it all figured out and someone put it on their shoulders to enlighten everyone around them. Please do not bring that here.
About the Plug
Look, I know that plugging your link and having your name on the website is the main reason you would do this. I know the chances that someone is doing the bare minimum just to say, "Hey look at my thing" is extremely high. I have no problem with that. Show off your thing.
The problem is never the plug. It's the effort put into the plug.
What if I want to put no effort into my post?
Use /trash/ board ... that's what it's there for.
Anatomy of a Post
A post looks something like this.

## This is a subheading.
Hi.
### About the subheadings
These "#" are what cause the table of contents items to appear in the right side bar.
Blah blah blah.
Other markdown and HTML work as well.
While that is useful to know, really all you have to do is provide me with the content: the paragraphs, the images, and I'll edit it into a presentable post. I'll handle optimizing the images and stuff like that since I have the tools to do that.
